forgot to mention!

The rescue group I work with in Manhattan, City Critters, Inc., has expanded its adoption locations! We can now be found not only at the Petco in Kips Bay (32nd Street/2nd Ave) with kitties for adoption, but we are also located at the Petsmart location in Soho! Our adoption counselor hours remain 12-6pm Sat/Sun at both locations, but you can view a few of our kitties or fill out applications anytime during the week. Come on by, we'd love to see you!

Also, I live in Astoria and LOVE shopping for my pet food at Whiskers' newer/second location on Ditmars Blvd. They are awesome there! So friendly, knowledgable and have a ton of great products. They even have the food my chinchilla loves, so I don't have to order it straight from Nebraska anymore! If you are in Astoria, check them out. They are on Ditmars, down my Astoria Park. And two store fronts down from their food/supply store, they've just opened up a new grooming salon that uses natural products for your pet. I can only imagine they are as thoughtful and caring there as they are in the main store. I highly recommend stopping by Whiskers for supplies, grooming, or just to say hi to the kitties for adoption in the front of the store!

Have a good "wheek",

back in 2011

It has been a while since I have posted due to travel over the holidays, a lovely round of illness with sinusitus and a cough, then the passing of our dear bunny, Miles. So, 2011 hasn't had the smoothest start, but I am still kicking and I am on semester 2 of my journey toward my pre-reqs for vet school.

This semester is Bio II and Chem I. I am still enjoying classes and keeping up. We get to dissect stuff in bio this semester, so I am really excited about that. I also have to say, Chemistry is more fun that I thought it would be....so far. I am surprised. So, if you've ever had questions about what these sorts of classes are like, let me know. I will be happy to share any info/insight I've gathered that may help you.

Frankly, my anxiety-driven need to organize everything has come in handy in school. That keeps the notes and such in order. Maybe a little neuroses aren't too bad? Plus, it gives me an excuse to go buy neat little organization items from Staples or the Container Store....oh, it is so dangerous shopping at those places!

Any who, I am extremely tired (I'm am NOT shocked by this), but happy. My hubby is now on a quest for a job to make him a happier human being as well, so hopefully we'll both be on this journey to a "better you" very soon. I know, that sounds very corny, but if you've ever felt it...you know what I mean. If you haven't, I hope you experience it one day soon. It is an exhausting, but fun ride.

Kristin

OVERVIEW - Time away from blog and some supply info

Has it really been over three "wheeks" since I last posted? Well, yes, it has, and I have been busy! I've had two exams so far this semester in the pre-vet back to school thing and so far, so good. So, studying is taking up a HUGE chunk of time. But it is definitely paying off.

I am also still working with City Critters every other weekend and helping out at The Art Farm in the City when needed, so I am pretty crazy now, but very happy. Speaking of the Art Farm....if you have kids younger than 8 years old, the "farm" will be open 8am-11am this Sunday and I will be there helping out - and yes, I will be in costume! So, bring your kids ($15 per child, $5 per adult) and we'll have fun feeding the animals! : ) I'll try to remember to take some pix and post them so you can see all the fun we are having.

As for animal info....right now Drs. Foster and Smith is having a huge Halloween clearance sale and I've seen some good stuff in their cat/dog and small animal catalogs. So, take a look online at http://www.drsfosterandsmith.com/ if you have a critter that needs some supplies. Their prices on toys, treats, bowls, and bedding is usually the cheapest I can find, so it is a good place to explore.

Also, if you have a chinchilla or know someone who does, please tell them about the great folks at http://www.chinworld.com/. They have put together an economic "monthly pack" that will allow you to take care of your chinchilla for 30 days without hurting your wallet - and the brands on supplies they use are top notch! They know how hard some people have been hit by the economy and how much people love their chinchillas. So, they created this package so you can take great care of your little guy and not have to give him/her up b/c of the cost of care.

I've had a friend asking about where to get new food bowls for her kitties and it got me thinking about places that I've found some of mine. The best places have been online really, or small independent pet supply stores. I found my cat's current bowl set at a great place in Manhattan called Bark Place. It is on 72nd Street, between York and First Ave. It is a cute pet boutique, but mostly dog stuff.  Check it out if in the neighborhood. There is also the Jumping Bulldog in Astoria, Queens (my stomping ground) on 23rd Aveue (around 27th/28th Street) for cute pet boutique items. Both are worth a visit if around the areas.

Well, that is all for now....until I think of something else!

MISC/BOOK: The Art Farm in the City, new book about the Vick dogs, Catnip newsletter

Good Morning folks!

Just a few pieces of info that I thought you might enjoy knowing about:

1. There is a great place to take kids 8 years and younger on the "wheek"ends. It is The Art Farm in the City - located on 91st Street, between York and 1st Ave (NYC). http://www.theartfarms.com/ They have a program on Sat/Sun mornings called "Mornings on the Farm" that I have helped out with since 2008. It is a great place for kids to handle and learn about animals. I highly recommend it, especially if your child hasn't met animals before and you would like to teach them about being compassionate and nice to other creatures. Each child also gets their own food basket so they can help the "farmer" feed all the animals.

2. A new book called "The Lost Dogs" has been released and it is about the dogs that were rescued from the Michael Vick dog fighting circle. I haven't read it yet, but the story was so tragic that I know I will want to hear more about the redemption these doggies received from rescuers.

3. There is a newsletter called Catnip (published by Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University) that is called "the newsletter for caring cat owners". It was introduced to me by one of my friends at City Critters and it is a great resource for cat lovers. You can take a look at it and get a free issue by visiting http://www.tuftscatnip.com/.

That is all I have time for right now, but stay tuned for pictures from last week's Strut your Muttt event, my trip to Woodstock Farm Sanctuary and info about a new book published by a friend of City Critters!

Take care of yourselves and your furry/feathered friends!
